One of every 25 homes on the Big Island was damaged by the Oct. 15 earthquakes.

DAMAGE estimates from the Oct. 15 earthquakes have soared in the past week as the Red Cross and federal officials have tallied homes and other structures in need of repair or replacement. Federal assistance will be limited, and the state should find other means to help Big Island residents recover from the disaster.

Federal and Big Island officials estimated damage at $46 million two days after the quake, mostly to schools and Kawaihae harbor, but that figure has more than doubled. The Red Cross last Saturday reported 27 homes were destroyed and 984 homes were damaged. The ...
