Hammered by competition from foreign textile firms, Dallco Industries Inc. has laid off about 1,000 employees since the early 1990s.

Many of those workers got help from a federal government program when they lost their jobs. It was an important safety net, said Doug Dallmeyer, president and majority owner of the York-based company, which now employs about 225.

"I would have to say that for the majority of our people, that was successful," he said. Many switched to the medical field. Others took computer jobs.

Dallco, meanwhile, is using federal cash grants to improve the business and seek out new markets.
