I work with clients using traditional cognitivebehavioral therapy but augment it with the application of metaphor, guided imagery, and Gestalt therapy techniques. I find that the inclusion and integration of these concepts allows the patients to more easily comprehend the role of their dichotomous right and wrong thinking, and quickly demonstrates the relationship between their thoughts and specific behaviors that are self-defeating. Cognitive therapy focuses on the underlying thoughts and core beliefs that cause emotional distress. The goal is to help the clients rid themselves of inaccurate, distorted, nonhelpful thoughts and replace them with healthy and accurate thoughts.
