The University of Connecticut issued the following news release:
A new University of Connecticut study has found that the thermometer used by the Boston Marathon is not a valid instrument - registering body temperatures as much as six degrees lower in some athletes than two clinically-proven temperature devices.
This is the first study to examine the validity of temporal temperature devices in athletes who have been exercising in the heat. The devices are currently used by the widely-respected medical staff at the Boston Marathon to assess runners' body temperatures and thus their risk for heat-related illnesses, including exertional heat stroke.
