Washington, Nov 16 -- A thorough study of the Neanderthal genome by US scientists has revealed that despite having a common ancestry with the modern humans, they are biologically different, and that there appears no evidence of genetic admixture between the two.

The new findings indicate an early split between the two species of humans.

The study, published in the journal Science, helps explain the evolutionary relationship between Homo sapiens and Neanderthals, and "signifies the dawn of Neanderthal genomics," write its authors.
