The absence of an industrywide certification program for operators of aerial devices means fleet- or manufacturer-sponsored training can make the difference between life and death.
Utility workers receive a lot of training, but one area that fleets may overlook is the operation of a vehicle-mounted aerial device, according to one industry expert.
Joshua Turner Chard, director of product and corporate safety for Altec Industries, Birmingham, Ala., said training vehicle and aerial-device operators is a two-pronged process. The first involves commercial driver license and Department of Transportation compliance.
