Voyeurism, fetishism, exhibitionism, necrophilia-why do men have all the fun? Until recently, psychoanalytic definitions of perversion tended to focus on men's sexual proclivities. A few years ago, though, in a book called Female Perversions, psychoanalyst Louise Kaplan argued that "normal" women's desperate fixation on the accoutrements of femininitylipstick, lingerie, and the like-bordered on pathological obsession.
First-time director Susan Streitfeld was casting about for a story when she came across Kaplan's book. Theoretical treatises don't usually lend themselves to film. (Can you imagine Das Kapital, the film?) But Streitfeld molded characters from the range of symptoms Kaplan ...
