Manitobans will soon have a legislated schedule for the sittings of the committee charged with holding government accountable for its spending.

Premier Gary Doer also promised to create a provincial privacy commissioner when he makes changes to freedom of information legislation. Manitoba is one of the last provinces to enact a privacy office.

The public accounts committee -- which in 2004 was called the weakest of its kind in Canada by the former auditor general -- will meet a minimum of six times a year on a schedule that is mandated by legislation, Doer said Wednesday.
