A previous issue of TRANSPORT TOPICS addressed an ailment known as obstructive sleep apnea and its effect on truck drivers with the condition (1-2, p. 7). This subject continues to dominate health-care news as a significant and potentially grave problem for the transportation industry. Recently, a task force of health-care professionals led by N. Hartenbaum, M.D., published an extensive and definitive work regarding sleep apnea in the transportation industry.
Sleep apnea is a medical condition characterized by periods when breathing stops (apnea) for short intervals during sleep. When this happens, the normal blood oxygen saturation begins to drop.
