The New York Yankees have overtaken the Detroit Tigers for the best record in baseball's American League.
The Yankees edged past the Tigers with a 9-4 victory over the Baltimore Orioles on Sunday. The New Yorkers' star shortstop and team captain, Derek Jeter, extended his hitting streak to 20 games.
The Tigers had the best winning percentage in the major leagues for much of this season, but their 12-1 loss to the Minnesota Twins Sunday dropped their record over the past 10 games to 3-7. Detroit holds a narrow two-game lead over the Twins in the American League Central division.
