The government of Ethiopia issued the following news release:

Minister of Information, Berhan Hailu, says Ethiopia has come under a situation so compelling as to defend itself now that the fundamentalist leadership operating in Somalia under the umbrella of the Union of Islamic Courts (UIC) has launched full-blown offensives to realize the Jihad it has repeatedly been declaring against Ethiopia in defiance of the calls brought forth to its attention to take up the peaceful option .

The minister called on the Ethiopian peoples to array their united forces towards maintaining the sovereignty and development of the country.
