Article: Japanese Inventors Develop Side Rail

ALEXANDRIA, Va., Nov. 28 -- Katsumi Takiguchi and Kazunori Kusama, both of Kashiwazaki, Japan, have developed a side rail and a combined oil control ring incorporated with the side rails for reduction of oil consumption.

According to the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "A side rail is formed into a ring shape having its generally rectangular section that has an outer surface formed with a pair of edge surfaces of small radius, and an intermediate surface of large radius of curvature formed between the edge surfaces. When the side rail is in the inclined condition in operation, each edge surface can easily ride on oil film on cylinder and allow the side rail to perform smooth sliding ...
