Although John Calvin was not a philosopher, he certainly was receptive to the philosophical ideas of his late medieval and early modern context. This is the basic contention of Paul Helm's book, John Calvin's Ideas. According to Helm, Calvin not only imbibed such ideas, but even used philosophical ideas and arguments in his theological works. Helm's work seeks to correct a long-standing trend in Calvin studies which has often divorced the reformer from the larger late medieval theological and philosophical tradition.
