Article: Economic impact of tourism industry spread throughout state

CHARLESTON--When West Virginia's tourism industry topped the $4 billion mark in 1996, the economic impact was spread throughout the state's 55 counties.

According to figures compiled by the West Virginia Division of Tourism, the tourism industry had an economic impact of $4.029 billion on the state last year.

The state also found that the tourism industry employed 76,337 West Virginians in 1996 and had a payroll of approximately $1.452 billion.

In compiling this data about the industry, the Division of Tourism divided the state into eight geographic regions.

In 1996, the tourism industry in each of these eight regions posted an economic impact in excess of $150 million.
