The 2.3km-long Heslach Tunnel connects the city centre of Stuttgart, Germany with the A8 motorway in the south-west of the city. With approximately 48,000 vehicles passing through it each day, this underground feeder is a heavily used stretch of tunnel.
To provide vehicle users with the opportunity to escape from the main tunnel in the event of an accident, retrofitting the 415m-long escape tunnel 'I west' and the new 410m-long escape tunnel 'I east' with the main tunnel was required. Both sections are connected by several passage-ways.
