MY FAVORITE CHILDHOOD MHMOKiES of Christmas are not always of Santa Claus or a cherished gift that has long since fallen from grace. I remember a sparkling tree glittering with tinsel. lights, and candy canes, dressed with beautiful hand-painted ornaments, delicate and feather-light to the touch. Some were prettier than others and every year, I noticed something different as I hung them from each bough. I even remember where I bought them-F.W. Woolworth's five and dime stores. A box of twelve usually sold for 98 cents; sometimes, the fancier ornaments could be rather expensive at $1.98.
