Article: Landfilling $600 million of aluminum cans

According to the Container Recycling Institute (CRI), the 36 billion aluminum cans that were landfilled last year had a scrap value of more than $600 million. "Over the past 20 years," says Pat Franklin, CRI executive director, "we've trashed more than 11 million tons of aluminum beverage cans worth over $12 billion. Someday we'll be mining our landfills for resources we've buried." Senator Jim Jeffords (R-VT) has introduced a bill aimed at encouraging recycling of aluminum cans and other materials.
