More American Muslims are expected to perform the hajj in 2006 than in previous years, according to Muslim organizations. The annual pilgrimage to Mecca in Saudi Arabia is a religious obligation for all Muslims who are able to make the journey.

"It is very special. There are 8 million Muslims in America, and if you get to make it, it is really very special," Sa'ad, a State Department employee about to leave for the hajj, told USINFO.
