The city of Elk Grove issued the following news release:

This holiday season, hundreds of Elk Grove residents will unwrap computers, MP3 players, flat screen television sets and cell phones. But what will happen to the outdated equipment? It will add up to a massive amount of electronic waste, or e-waste. And that could be a problem.

Electronic waste can't go out with the rest of the trash. These electronic appliances constitute a potential environmental and public health threat when they end up in landfills, leaking toxic substances like lead, mercury and chromium, which could potentially get into our groundwater resources.
