Article: Italian Inventor Develops Vehicle Warm-Up Phase Management Method

ALEXANDRIA, Va., Jan. 12 -- Claudio Catalano of Milan, Italy, has developed a method for managing the vehicle warm-up phase in a cold start situation.

According to the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "The vehicle is equipped with a hydraulic retarder upstream of the set of gears of the transmission that dissipates heat in the engine coolant. Said method is based on the use of the hydraulic retarder, with the vehicle at a standstill, to accelerate the vehicle warm-up phase, in particular the warming of the cabin, the transmission oil, the oil of the brake cooling system and the engine cooling water."

The inventor was issued U.S. Patent No. 7,159,554 on Jan. 9.
