It ain't gonna fly. That was Kevin Talbot's gut sense when Jenni Peters asked him to critique her business plan for a specialty running store in Baton Rouge.
Talbot, the owner of Sneakers Sports Shop, had a lot of respect for Peters. He welcomed her as a rival in the sports shoe business. If anyone could make it, Peters, a national class runner and LSU marketing professor, could.
But, honestly, he just didn't think Baton Rouge could support the runningcentered store she envisioned. Life's tough in the athletic shoe biz, where even the best stores can expect just a 7 percent to 8 percent profit on shoes.
