Article: Paccar to Build Class 8 Engines For Peterbilt, Kenworth Trucks

Truck maker Paccar Inc., owner of Kenworth and Peterbilt, last week said it will build its own engines in the United State's beginning in 2009, becoming the last major heavy-cluty truck manufacturer to offer an integrated Class 8 tractor.

The Paccar engines are 9- and 13-liter versions of the power plants the company is currently supplying in its European subsidiary, DAF. They will supplement, not displace, the Caterpillar and Cummins engines Paccar currently offers U.S. customers.

Paccar Treasurer Andy Wold told TRANSPORT TOPICS that among the reasons for the change was that the company had "learned from DAF of the manufacturing and assembly advantages of having our powertrain."
