Article: Engines Keep Making News

The news about heavy-duty diesel engines this year was supposed to he all about the latest federal emission standards and the use of ultra-lowsulfur diesel fuel.

But this week's Page One includes two engine stories of a different sort and shows how much more is likely to change in that market.

Paccar Inc. announced that it was going to begin producing its first-ever engines in the United States, to be installed in its Peterbilt and Kenworth trucks.

The company said it would build a $400 million plant in the southeastern United States to produce these 9- and 13-liter engines. Construction will begin this year and the company expects to launch the engines in 2009.
