Wellington, Jan 2 -- New Zealand adventurers Kevin Biggar and Jamie Fitzgerald reached the South Pole Tuesday after walking 1,100 km across Antarctica, dragging 160-kg sleds and unsupported by supply drops.
"We were welcomed by the head of the US base camp here and he offered us a cup of tea and a cookie which I must say was one of the best treats I have ever had in my life," Fitzgerald, 26, told Radio New Zealand by satellite telephone.
