Steel Dynamics Inc. in Fort Wayne is one of the few steel manufacturers flourishing in an industry decimated by a glut of cheaper imports.

Founded in 1993 by CEO Keith Busse and two partners, Steel Dynamics has avoided the carnage by pioneering a process that enables the company to produce steel less expensively.

Known within the industry as thin-slab casting, the technique casts a steel ribbon two inches thick instead of the standard 12 inches. It benefits the steel-making process for flat products by circumventing the large investment in equipment needed to break the 12-inch slabs down to two inches.
