Heavy-Duty Engine Buyers Sprint to Beat '07 Rules

Caterpillar Inc. and Cummins Inc. both reported strong profit gains in the fourth quarter as demand for heavy-duty engines surged ahead of tougher emission regulations from the Emironmental Protection Agency.

Caterpillar said it earned $882 million, or $1.32 a share, during the fourth quarter - up from $846 million, or $1.20, a year earlier. The company recorded quarterly reyemies of $11 billion, up from $9.67 billion.

Meanwhile, Cummins said it earned $189 million, or $3.75 a share, compared with $167 million, or $3.31, in the 2005 period. Revenues were $3.03 billion, compared with $2.75 billion in 2005.
