Article: UNITED KINGDOM: HMS CHATHAM HONOURED WITH TOP MILITARY AWARD

The government of United Kingdom's Ministry of Defence's Royal Navy issued the following news release:

HMS Chatham will receive the Firmin Sword of Peace, one of the highest military honours, in recognition for her disaster relief work in the aftermath of the 2004 tsunami in Sri Lanka.

When the devastating tsunami smashed into Sri Lanka off the northwest Indonesian coast on Boxing Day 2004, HMS Chatham was quickly diverted from Dubai to help provide humanitarian assistance to the many thousands affected by the disaster.

The devastating tsunami registered over 9 on the Richter scale.
