Article: JOSEPH NICHOLS SCHEDULED FOR EXECUTION

The Texas Attorney General issued the following news release:

Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott offers the following information about Joseph Bernard Nichols, who is scheduled to be executed after 6 p.m. Wednesday, March 7, 2007. A Harris County jury sentenced Nichols to death the for 1980 murder of Claude Shaffer, Jr.

FACTS OF THE CRIME

On October 13, 1980, Nichols and Willie Ray Williams drove to a spot near Joseph's Delicatessen and Grocery in Houston and entered the deli. Williams was armed with a .380 semi-automatic pistol; Nichols had a snub-nosed .38 revolver. Both men pointed their pistols at deli employee Claude Shaffer, Jr., who was behind the counter near the cash register.
