Darwin's Origin of Species was published in 1859 and the power of the Church of England was decimated. There was no God to be angry and the threat of Hell had evaporated. But, although it was a triumph for science, and knowledge is normally to be welcomed, there were definitely cons to the pros in this case. Religion provided dos and don'ts which science does not. Not many people truly understand the implications of evolutionary theory. We have the paradox that science, by damaging religion, opened the doors to anti-science in our society.
