The Not So Noble Experiment

(Or Why Being a Feminist Means Never Having to Say You're Sorry)

In 1920 the United States began what later became known as "the Noble Experiment". By the 18th Amendment to the Constitution the manufacture, sale and importation of alcohol was made illegal throughout the USA. Prohibition had arrived. A long and unholy alliance between urban socialist utopianism and rural Protestant fundamentalism had long blamed alcohol for vice, poverty, crime and all the public and private woes of America. Their view had finally triumphed. The New World in the new 20th Century was to set an example to the rest of the world as to the advantages of being an alcohol-free zone.
