Thane (Maharashtra), March 1 -- Following an age-old tribal tradition, 990 couples tied nuptial knots in a mass marriage in Maharshtra's Thane District recently.

Organised by a self-help group, the huge wedding ceremony held as much significance for the tribal parents as it held for the individuals getting married.

The couples belonged to extremely backward and financially unstable families who could not afford the huge cost to conduct individual marriage that required entertaining a lot of relatives and performing rituals.
