Article: Free Press reporters nominated for awards

A story about the booming -- but shadowy -- business of slaughtering horses earned Free Press reporter Paul Wiecek criticism and rebuke at the racetrack.

On Friday, it also earned him a nomination for one of the most coveted awards in Canadian journalism.

Wiecek's 5,000-word story, headlined Saddling up for slaughter, was named a finalist in the sports writing category of the 2006 National Newspaper Awards.

It was one of two NNA nominations for the Free Press.

Reporter Dan Lett, now a provincial affairs columnist, received his second NNA nomination in four years for his series, Seeds of Hope, which traced the journey of a 50-tonne shipment of Manitoba wheat to refugee camps in Sudan.
