Pennsylvania cracks down on restaurant-inspection lapses

In November 2005, the Pennsylvania Department of the Auditor General announced that the state Department of Agriculture was endangering people's health by failing to annually inspect restaurants and other food servers before renewing their licenses. The Auditor General Department publicized an audit that found that about 4,000 of the state's approximately 17,597 restaurants, bars and stores that serve food and drinks had their licenses renewed annually although they weren't inspected for at least two years.

One eatery's license was renewed annually for six years without inspection, according to the audit.
