Article: French Inventors Develop Portable Lighting Device

ALEXANDRIA, Va., March 23 -- Paul Petzl of Grenoble, France, and Alain Maurice of St. Hilaire du Touvet, France, have developed a portable lighting device with a light-emitting diode.

According to the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "A portable lighting lamp comprises an emitting module equipped with at least one light-emitting diode for emitting a light beam, a fixing and connecting element of said diode, and an optical focusing device able to be moved in front of the diode to make the visualization angle of the light beam vary."

An abstract of the invention, released by the Patent Office, said: "The optical focusing device is advantageously constituted by one or more Fresnel lenses ...
