Abstract

The clinical and economic burden of insomnia is enormous. Insomnia, with its associated symptoms of sleep disruption, affects about 99 million people in the United States, making it more prevalent than arthritis, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. This burden is especially great in the elderly. The majority of elderly people who have symptoms of insomnia complain of sleep maintenance problems. Insomnia also has a significant impact on health and healthcare costs. Insomnia is an independent risk factor for diabetes, and is associated with anxiety disorders, depression, and increased risk of falls in the elderly.
