Article: Food residuals recycling makes a great circle

THE MOTHER of a New Jersey sixth grader called last week asking if we had statistics on the quantity of food residuals in the national waste stream. Her daughter's science project is on the benefits of recycling/composting. As reported in August 2001 Bio Cycle, food residuals comprise 21.9 million tons of the estimated 217 million tons of solid waste generated nationwide (approximately 10.1 percent). Latest figures available indicate that only 569,000 tons - 2.6 percent of the total food residuals - were diverted to recycling options such as composting or animal feed.
