Despite its hocuspocus image, hypnosis provides the medical community with an effective weapon against many illnesses.

Like most people, I had my doubts about hypnosis. Mystical, hocus-pocus stuff, I thought. Used for all the wrong reasons by magicians, or Rasputin-like characters who waved objects in front of people's faces while repeating, "You are getting sleeeepy." In making those assumptions I was wrong, and it took a New Orleans surgeon to set me straight.
