THE great Shakespeare roles are now, quite rightly, open to women as well as men.
It was big news a decade ago when Kathryn Hunter became the first woman in Britain to play King Lear in a professional production. It was still a rarity when Maggie Nagle assumed the title role in a Dust Bowl Lear for Shakespeare in the Ruins two years ago.
Actress and drama teacher Nancy Drake gets her chance, beginning tonight at 7:30 p.m., to tackle what many call Shakespeare's supreme achievement when she takes the stage in a University of Winnipeg production at the Gas Station Theatre.
