Article: La Crosse County ranks high in dioxin emissions

La Crosse County ranked eighth in the United States in smokestack emissions of dioxin in 2005, according to new data from the Environmental Protection Agency.

Thursday, the EPA released the 2005 Toxics Release Inventory, a database of emissions reported by companies as required. by Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act of 1986.

The report shows dioxin emissions from Xcel Energy's French Island waste-to-energy plant increased from 8.07 grams in 2004 to 13.8 grams in 2005. Xcel is the only dioxin emitter in the county required to report TRI data.
