Pennsylvania State University at New Kensington issued the following news release:
The first spring flowers along the Penn State New Kensington Nature Trail are blooming and others will emerge in the next few weeks.
Spring Beauty (Claytonia virginica ), Bloodroot (Sanguinaria canadensis), Spicebush (Lindera benaoin), and Skunk Cabbage (Symlocarpus foetidus) are the first to appear.
Spring beauty is a small plant with white to pinkish flowers and two narrow green leaves at the base. The spice bush, which is quite abundant along the trail, has delicate yellow flowers that emerge several weeks before its leaves.
