Hennepin County issued the following press release:
The Hennepin County Board of Commissioners today approved a resolution directing county staff to prepare enabling legislation that would consolidate the Hennepin County Library and Minneapolis Public Library systems.
The merger would consolidate the Minneapolis Public Library and the Hennepin County Library systems. The Hennepin County system currently includes 26 suburban libraries.
Discussion on the merger has already begun at the Minnesota Legislature. Enabling legislation to allow the consolidation would include amending the Minneapolis city charter, and granting countywide taxing authority to support the newly merged system.
