Arthur Kroeger of Ottawa, the author of the recently released book, Hard Passage: A Mennonite Family's Long Journey from Russia to Canada, was the keynote speaker at this year's Mennonite Historical Society of Canada meeting in Calgary last month.
Kroeger, the youngest child of Heinrich and Helena Kroeger, was born in Naco, Alta., after his parents emigrated from Russia with their five oldest children. He arose out of that poverty, gained a university education-including a Rhodes Scholarship, worked for the Canadian government for 34 years, taught at several universities and served as chancellor of Carleton University in Ottawa, before retiring.
