Washington, April 13 -- Scientists will attempt to cross the North Pole by zeppelin as part of a study aimed at creating a continual profile of ice thickness in the Arctic, extending from the Canadian coast across the North Pole to Siberia.
The airship will be equipped with an electromagnetic sensor being developed at the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research, one of the 15 research centres within the Helmholtz Association, Germany.
The project, the brainchild of French physician Jean-Louis Etienne, is being financed by the French oil company Total and was presented in Berlin on April 5.
