Five Air National Guard airlift units will lose planes and personnel in a plan contained in the proposed FY 98 Defense budget, which was recently announced by the Air Force. Twenty aircraft, 155 fulltime positions and 625 traditional airmen positions will be lost by Air Guard lift units from California, Kentucky, North Carolina, Tennessee and West Virginia.
The moves result from a drop in the number of C-130 Hercules the Air Force believes are needed to fight two nearly simultaneously major regional conflicts (MRCs).
