When Pro Stock made its national event debut at the 1970 Winternationals, the bulk of the field was made up of muscle cars. "Muscle car" was the generic term given to original factory vehicles that were manufactured with large-cubic-inch, high-horsepower engines. These cars had been very popular with the younger segment of the automotive market since they appeared on the scene in the mid-1960s.
Among the entries in that first 16-car field were five 427-cid Chevrolet Camaros, three 426-cid Plymouth Hemi Barracudas, and one similarly powered Dodge Challenger, all of which were available in tamer versions of those engine/body configurations at any local dealer.
