AFTER demanding proof reducing salt prevents heart attacks and strokes, the salt industry gets its answer today: a new study suggests salt could be to blame for one-quarter or more of heart attacks, strokes and coronary artery disease.

People who ate a salt-reduced diet were 25 to 30 per cent less likely to develop cardiovascular problems after 10 to 15 years followup. They also had a 20 per cent lower risk of dying in the followup period.

As well, the study involved people with only modestly elevated blood pressure.

The Canadian Stroke Network calls the findings "absolutely dramatic."
