LAST night at the Pantages Playhouse theatre, Winnipeggers bade adieu (and adios, and auf wiedersehen, and arrivederci) to one of pop music's all-time greats.

After a 48-year career, Nana Mouskouri is hanging up her trademark square-rimmed glasses and taking a greatly deserved break.

Since starting her career singing folk and pop tunes in her native Greece, the multilingual singer has sold almost 300 million albums worldwide, making her the top-selling female artist of all time.

Though Mouskouri was never as powerful a presence in North America as she was in Europe, a passionate core of fans embraced her sparkling renditions of pop and jazz standards.
