Abstract
This article explores the hegemony that the Empirically Supported Treatment (EST) movement has exerted on the field of psychotherapy in the last decade. We begin by discussing epistemology and the role of empiricism in inquiry. We then provide an overview of the EST movement and t
he use of treatment manuals; summarize some of the criticisms of the EST movement and its foundational assumptions; present a summary of the 2005 Evidence-Based Practice in Psychology report; consider whether or not the EST movement threatens to monopolize psychotherapy; and conclude with an Integral methodological pluralism (Wilber, 2000a) that addresses the limitations imposed by EST inquiry.
