China: Shandong Apparel Exports in Crisis Atmosphere

Exports of apparel produced in Shangdong Province are in a crisis atmosphere never experienced before. According to the local media, contributing factors are rising manufacturing costs within China, a rapid growth in neighboring countries, and among other things, a slowdown of Chinese exports to Europe and the U.S.

As a result of the implementation of new export restrictions by Europe and the U.S. in 2005, exports of some Chinese-made textile products remained at a standstill for almost half a year. During that period, those orders which China failed to receive found their ways into neighboring countries with fast growing textile industries like Pakistan, India, Vietnam, Cambodia, ...
