Cattle on way to Russia

OTTAWA -- Nearly 2,000 Canadian cattle are on their way to Russia in the largest single shipment of its kind since BSE, or mad cow disease, was found in a Canadian cow in May 2003.

Much of the world reacted to that by closing their borders to Canadian cattle.

It took more than two years for the U.S. border to accept Canadian cattle. It still remains closed to breeding cattle, the kind that were loaded on to a boat in Port de Becancour, Que., on Friday before taking a two-week journey to Russia.
